English is the universal language in Europe. With so many different nations as members of the European Union there is an ease of traveling and working among the countries that have varied languages. Most of the Latvians see an advantage of learning to speak English if they are going to work in Norway, Sweden, Iceland or Ireland. If you are seeking a job in a foreign country you almost have to know the native language or understand English.
Laura has recently begun teaching English lessons again. We offered the lessons when we first came to Cesis but for a variety of reasons they got pushed to the side. After numerous requests, the activities schedule was altered and we now have the lessons on Wednesday night at the church.
Two classes are offered. Vocabulary training is given for the most basic learners with an emphasis on increasing the students' basic word comprehension. The second class works a little deeper and gets into the complexity of English grammar.
After being in the classroom for almost 30 years, Laura is a natural teacher standing in front of her students. (Have you ever practiced learning the days of the week by singing the Addams' Family theme song?) The students range in age from an upper high school student to a lady in her fifties that just wants to improve her speaking ability.
The classes are a great way to foster church fellowship and cooperation among the members. We are thankful we have our own building now so that we don't have to plan everything around someone else's schedule and pay a rental fee. English lessons from a private tutor can be quite expensive for someone already on a tight budget. We are glad to be able to offer this instruction at no cost.
